India’s Ganges River is arguably the holiest as well as one of the most polluted rivers in the world. A major part of the pollution is caused by tanneries that discharge their wastewater into the Ganges. With about 400 tanneries, Kanpur is the center of India’s leather industry. The pollution affects more than 400 million people who depend on the river for their livelihoods. Labourers often face unacceptable working conditions and health hazards caused by the use of toxics in the leather tanning process.
